ACT & CBT Psychotherapist
Hello and welcome — I’m Allan Henderson, a therapist working with children, young people and adults, and I’m really glad you’re here.
Starting therapy can feel like a big step. It can also feel a bit daunting, serious, or even awkward at first. My aim is to create a space that feels safe, supportive and non-judgemental, but also human, relaxed and occasionally a little lighter, where it’s okay to be yourself.
Available for new clients
Out of the clinic room, I enjoy lots of outdoor activities like kayaking, cold water swimming, rock climbing and hillwalking; though I'm just as happy lounging beside a fire or watching Netflix.
My work is primarily informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), alongside Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
ACT helps people learn to:
- Make room for difficult thoughts and feelings, rather than battling with them
- Notice what’s happening in the present moment (even when it’s uncomfortable)
- Understand what really matters to them and take steps in that direction
CBT techniques are also used where helpful, particularly to:
- Explore the links between thoughts, feelings and behaviour
- Develop practical coping strategies
- Gently challenge unhelpful patterns of thinking
Sessions are collaborative and flexible, and where it feels right, I use metaphors, creativity, humour and playfulness to make therapy more engaging and less intimidating. Therapy doesn’t have to be heavy all the time to be meaningful — and it’s not just about “talking about feelings” if that doesn’t suit you.
I have a particular interest in working with children and young people, adapting sessions to be age-appropriate, engaging and sometimes playful, helping young people feel comfortable enough to explore what’s going on for them.
What You Can Expect
- A warm, respectful and down-to-earth approach
- Therapy that goes at your pace
- Practical tools you can use in everyday life
- Space for seriousness and laughter, reflection and creativity
If you have any questions or would like to explore whether therapy with me feels like a good fit, you’re very welcome to get in touch.
I look forward to working with you.
