Dr Gillian Findlay

Clinical Psychologist

I'm Dr Gillian Findlay, a Clinical Psychologist based in Aberdeen, in North East Scotland, and I specialise in couples therapy and relationship therapy online across the UK.

The people I support, most often couples, feel stuck in their relationship, perhaps caught in the same arguments, or struggling to connect the way they used to. Sometimes a life change, such as illness, loss, or family stress, shifts something between people. You might feel lonely even though you're together, or like you're walking on eggshells - never quite sure how a conversation will go.

While much of my work is with couples, I also work with siblings, parents and adult children, and people who want to understand why they keep running into the same difficulties in their close relationships.

About me

My practice as a Clinical Psychologist is informed by twenty-three years of experience across health, mental health and social care, in roles ranging from direct care work to social work with children and families. Alongside my private practice I work in a specialist cancer charity.

I work with couples at any stage of their relationship, as well as siblings, parents and adult children, close friends, and individuals wanting to understand their own relational patterns. I welcome all backgrounds and relationship structures, including polyamorous and non-traditional relationships

My approach

My priority is always building a safe and trusting relationship with the people I am supporting. It is this safe relationship that allows people to feel confident to be vulnerable and share how they really feel in sessions. This is crucial for us to be able to identify what is really going on within the relationship and the cycles that keep playing out, which enables us to make changes in those cycles.

Specialties

Relationship problems

Methodologies

Systemic therapy
Emotionally focused couple therapy (EFT)
The Gottman Method

Education

I’m a Clinical Psychologist registered with the Health Care Professions Council (the UK’s official regulator for health professionals). I have a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, an MSc in Social Work and a BSc in Psychology.

I draw on my additional training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, which helps partners understand emotional patterns and build secure connections; Gottman Method Couples Therapy, a research-based approach building practical communication and conflict skills; and systemic therapy, which considers relationships in their wider context - alongside Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy, where helpful.
