Imogen Ruth

Integrative Counsellor

I'm Imogen, an MNCPS Accredited counsellor based in London, and offering online sessions anywhere in the UK.

People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons. Many people I work with arrive at this point feeling stuck or disconnected, like something underneath isn't aligned with what the rest of the world sees. Some have noticed familiar patterns, particularly in their relationships, and want to understand why they find themselves in the same places again and again. Others are overwhelmed, caught up in the business of Survival Mode, knowing they want things to change but are so overloaded it's hard to know where to start.

The troubles that bring us to therapy are as varied as the people who carry them, though maybe something you've read here so far resonates with you.

About me

I offer a warm, supportive space for people who wish to understand themselves and their experiences more deeply. I work integratively, drawing on a range of therapeutic approaches to best meet the needs and preferences of each individual I work with. Regardless of the particular flavour of the work we do together, I trust in your innate capacity for growth and positive change, and recognise you as the expert in your own life and experiences.

I pay attention to the social and political context we inhabit, and within which our work together is taking place. I am committed to working anti-oppressively and I strive to work in a way that acknowledges, affirms, and honours your whole self.

My approach

There are as many ways to Do Therapy as there are therapists. I have been integratively trained, and draw most often from Gestalt and person-centred theories when working with clients.

There is a (somewhat unhelpful!) stereotype of person-centred counsellors as head-nodding and passive 'blank walls'. This is not how I work. I engage in sessions actively and collaboratively, with the aim of helping you make connections and build awareness. Ultimately, though, you set the agenda and the pace. I believe that my role as a counsellor is that of a fellow traveller - we're on your road, and you're leading the way.

I work with all kinds of people, though many of my clients have been parents of young children, solo parents, and people navigating relationship issues, questions of identity, big life transitions, and grief, loss, or bereavement. I am allied with those who belong to the LGBTQIA+ community, those who are neurodivergent, those in non-traditional relationship configurations, and those who do sex work. I will strive to meet you where you are, without agenda.

Education

I graduated from Heartwood Counselling & Psychotherapy College in 2026 with an Advanced Diploma in Counselling. This integrative core training was grounded in person-centred and Gestalt theories, as well as mindfulness-based behavioural techniques, transactional analysis, and attachment theory. I undertake regular CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training to keep my knowledge current and to stay informed on issues and topics that impact my clients.

As part of my training, I volunteered for 14 months with Home-Start Westminster, working with parents of young children. Following that, I began a second placement with a long-established bereavement counselling charity, with whom I continue to volunteer, working with clients who are living with loss, bereavement, and complex grief. Across both positions I have worked with a culturally and socially diverse client group.

I trained as a counsellor after having experienced my own struggles with mental health, and made my own therapeutic journey. I am a great believer in the idea that the right kind of talk therapy, with the right person and at the right time, can be beneficial for almost everyone.

Outside of my training and experience as a counsellor, I have worked across many sectors including hospitality, retail, administrative and access support, and various work in creative industries. My positions have been varied but linked with a common thread of service, creativity, and care.
