Jonathan Percale

Clinical Psychologist

I am a Clinical Psychologist with more than twenty years' experience, working with individuals (adults and adolescents), couples, families and groups. Over my career I have worked with a broad spectrum of psychological difficulty — from everyday distress through to severe and complex mental health conditions — beginning with a year of community service, then building my career in public service at a leading specialist psychiatric hospital, and now in private online practice. I established Percale Psychology to offer experienced, carefully tailored therapy in a setting where people feel genuinely understood.

About me

For fifteen years I worked at Tara, The H. Moross Centre, a specialist psychiatric hospital and tertiary academic training centre in Johannesburg, affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand. I joined as a Clinical Psychologist and went on to serve for nearly a decade as Head of the Department of Psychology, leading a team that grew, under my leadership, to nine permanent psychologists alongside community-service psychologists and intern psychologists.

Tara is widely regarded as a centre of excellence for psychotherapeutic treatment and professional training. My clinical work there spanned its inpatient and outpatient services and a broad spectrum of difficulties, including mood and personality difficulties, psychotic illnesses and complex trauma. I provided individual psychotherapy, family therapy, and inpatient and outpatient group therapy. I established a new weekly inpatient group programme built around a reflecting-team model and, with the outpatient and psychotherapy unit teams, developed an expanded outpatient Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) programme.

As a joint appointee with the Wits Medical School, I supervised and trained interns, psychiatry registrars and medical students, and I ran the hospital's outpatient Family Therapy Clinic.

This combination of senior clinical practice, supervision, teaching and leadership is something I now bring to my work with every individual, couple, family or group I see.

I relocated to the United Kingdom in 2020 and now work in online private practice. Working this way makes thoughtful, experienced therapy accessible from anywhere in the country.

I remain closely engaged with the international professional community, including the South African Psychoanalytic Initiative (SAPI), and I continue to supervise and teach. This ongoing involvement keeps my practice current, reflective and connected to the wider field.

My approach

Lasting change comes from genuine understanding rather than quick fixes. My work is relational and collaborative: I take time to understand the whole person, the relationships around them, and the context of their difficulties, drawing on psychoanalytic, systemic and group-analytic ways of thinking.

Therapy with me is a partnership. I offer a calm, non-judgemental and confidential space, and I work at a pace that feels right for you — whether you come as an individual, a couple or a family. My aim is always to help you understand yourself and your relationships more fully, to ease distress, and to support the changes you want to make.

Education

I hold a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, awarded cum laude, from Rand Afrikaans University, Johannesburg (now the University of Johannesburg). My earlier background in philosophy continues to inform the way I think and work as a therapist. I have undertaken extensive further training over many years in psychoanalytic, systemic and group-analytic approaches, including as a member of the Ububele Group Analytic Seminars (UGAS) at the Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust. In 2021 I was invited to become a Fellow of the SAPI College of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (FSCPP) in recognition of my clinical experience and ongoing professional development.

I am registered with:

- Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), United Kingdom — Registration number PYL048263

- Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) — Psychologist, Independent Practice (Clinical Psychology), Registration number PS 0085561

"Clinical Psychologist" is a title protected by law in the United Kingdom, and may be used only by those registered with the HCPC.
