Consultant Clinical Psychologist
When somebody experiences severe life stressors or trauma, it is not unusual for this to have a significant impact on their lives. Having worked as a psychologist in the NHS and MoD for nearly 20 years, I have always been humbled by the strength and resilience people show when confronting or working through their difficulties and moving forward with their lives.
Having trained in South Africa between 1991-1998, I have gained an understanding of people from diverse cultural perspectives and speak several languages. I moved to the UK in 2000 and worked in CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) until 2009. I then worked at Broomfield hospital developing the individual Pain Management service until I accepted a post in the MoD (Ministry of Defence), where I worked for the past 15 years. I have lectured at the University of Essex, University of East Anglia (UEA) and Hertfordshire University, as well as presented as a guest speaker at several conferences and symposiums for the MoD, Veteran Services and NHS Trusts. I was on the UKPTS board for 2 years and helped develop guidelines for working with Complex Trauma. In 2010 I was part of a team that received an award for a Veterans Network that we set up. I have a special interest in Resilience and Mental well-being, and I am a trainer in Suicide First Aid intervention (ASIST).
As a Consultant Chartered Clinical Psychologist, I have worked extensively with clients struggling with a wide variety of difficulties including work related stress, self-esteem and confidence issues, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. I believe no single approach is right for everyone and so I have trained in a variety of modalities including CBT, EMDR, ACT, psychodynamic, Schema-focussed, Mindfulness, CPT and person-centred approaches amongst others. I work with both adults and young people (age 12 and older), individually or in groups offering both time-limited interventions and open-ended sessions, depending on need.
